When I am trying to write a book, I have to consider what length it should be. The Post-Petroleum Survival Guide was initially planned for about 50000 to 60000 words, and ended up closer to 90000. Early drafts of the manuscript were even longer. One way of keeping the size down is to take much of the "encyclopedic" material out of the book, and put it up on the website. That also is a good way to keep breaking news items current with developing trends. So this page has many of those resources, along with the easiest ways to get many of the products mentioned in the book.

solar shower plans

We have installed and used these showers since 1988, and they are of the best-performing, least cost designs on the market. Using mostly recycled, inexpensive and renewable materials, these stalls can deliver up to 30 hot showers per day. They are not freezeproof, however, so in a cold climate the use may have to be seasonal. Plans are $25 plus shipping; finished showers cost around $300 to $500USD depending on materials used.

Homemade Blackberry Jam

Time to make 25 min (10 min prep)

Ingredients:

5 cups crushed blackberries (do not puree, crush with a potato masher)
7 cups sugar
1 (1 3/4 ounce) package fruit jell pectin

Instructions:

1. Carefully measure out the berries, put them into a very large pot (8 qt).
2. Carefully measure sugar in a lg bowl.
3. Add the pectin to the berries a little at a time, stirring constantly.
4. Heat on high, stirring constantly until mixture comes to a FULL boil.
5. Add sugar ALL at once, stirring.
6. Bring mixture back to a full hard boil, stirring constantly.
7. Boil for 1 minute.
8. Remove from heat and ladle into clean, hot 8 oz jars, leaving 1/4 inch space at the top.
9. Wipe the rim of the jar and put canning lids and rings on firmly tight.
10. Place in canner with very hot water, make sure water is 1 inch above jars.
11. Process in boiling water bath for 10 minutes.
12. Remove and set them upright on a towel to set for 12 hours.
